The Midway Seminar of the ESPON project “Potential of Rural Regions” will take place in 28 March, 2011 in Valmiera, Latvia. The aim of Midway seminar is to reflect on current progress of ESPON 2013 project „Potential of Rural Regions” and assess what has to be done to bring the project to a satisfactory conclusion. During the seminar key findings of PURR Interim Report will be presented and discussed, including the case studies for five Stakeholder regions.
The Midway seminar will be attended by PURR Trans-national Project Group (Norwegian Institute of Urban and Regional Research, London South Bank University and Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences) as well as representatives of the Norwegian, Latvian and possibly also British stakeholder regions.
Midway seminar will be an excellent opportunity to discuss the project in wider circle, therefore policy planners and researchers are very welcome to join.
The seminar participants would comment on the findings of the Interim Report and provide their input for the draft template which aims to assess regional potentials and address other content related issues. PURR project was designed to create and test new ways to explore the territorial potentials of some rural areas and small and medium-sized towns in peripheral parts of Europe around the North Sea, the Irish Sea and the Baltic Sea. These places face problems such as ageing, migration, poor accessibility, restructuring of traditional industries and are further threatened by rising energy costs. However, they also possess some territorial assets related to their natural and cultural heritage and in the sense of identity that many have. The analysis of PURR uses ESPON results to benchmark the stakeholder regions in their European context and develop and apply methodologies for identifying and realizing territorial potentials in these places.
