Ireland- Wales: Europe Day 2011

What is Europe Day?
Have you ever noticed that 9th May is referenced as “Europe Day” in your diary?  On 9 May 1950 the first move was made towards the creation of what is now known as the European Union.
In Paris that day, the French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman read a declaration to the international press calling for France, Germany and other European countries to pool their coal and steel production as "the first concrete foundation of a European federation".
The European Union is considered to have begun on that day and at the 1985 Milan Summit of EU leaders, European leaders decided to celebrate 9 May each year as "Europe Day".
