IFOAM Conference: "Organic Agriculture and Agro-Eco Tourism in the Mediterranean"

 

The International Conference of AgriBioMediterraneo - IFOAM for Organic Agriculture and Agro-Eco Tourism in the Mediterranean on 16-18 September 2011 at Zakynthos Island is organised by DIO organization and Region of Ionian Islands. The conference is held under the auspices of Region of Ionian Islands, Agrocert and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, with the participation of the organizations IFOAM, ISOFAR and BIOLMED programme. Supporters and sponsors of the conference are numerous universities, organizations and individuals.

The objective is to promote and strengthen the relationship between organic agriculture and agro-ecotourism, which can contribute to an alternative development, the protection of biodiversity, the support of direct marketing (local markets, direct sales), the emergence at a local level of the rural-social-cultural characteristics of each region, the interrelation of protected areas and organic farming, as well as the environmental education and awareness.

The conference will cover the following topics:

8) environmental education

10) alternative tourism development

12) case studies

13) green economy

14) agro-eco-tourism and disabled,

with more than 50 oral presentations and 35 posters by renowned scientists and researchers from universities, experts from agencies and stakeholders in organic agriculture. The acknowledgement of the speakers is undoubted, based on their honorary positions in the sector of organic agriculture worldwide and for many years. Indicatively we can refer to: Markus Arbenz (Germany), Ranko Tadic (Croatia), Charikleia Minotou (Greece), Karen Hoberg (Spain), Drazen Lusic (Croatia), Aktham Badran (Palestine), Fabio Piccioli (Italy), Paola Migliorini (Italy), Guy Rilov (Israel), Yousri Hashem (Egypt). The official language of the conference is English; there will be also interpretation in the Greek language throughout the conference.

During the conference, it will take place the 6th General Assembly of the Mediterranean Section of the IFOAM - AgriBioMediterraneo, on September 17th 2011, and the final meeting of the BIOLMED programme.

Moreover, many parallel events will take place such as organic olive oil degustation, exhibition of photography on biodiversity by Andrea Bonetti, cartoon competition for organic agriculture and AgroEcoTourism, and an excursion in order to be presented case studies in Zakynthos (oil-mills, wineries, protected areas, organic farms, agrotouristic businesses, unique Mediterranean ecosystems and landscapes).
